Marguerite Scully, a professional genealogical researcher and lecturer, will present “Organizing Your Genealogical Research,” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
Scully says that there comes a point in almost everyone’s genealogical research efforts when the lack of organization of the information we have collected is hindering our ability to make any further progress. “If family historians become aware of this problem, it is usually because we discover we have spent time collecting records that we already have or we find ourselves having to go back again and again through our records to figure out what we already have and what we are still missing,” she says.
She believes strongly that organization is the key to progress with genealogical research. She will describe a way to organize the family history information to avoid “spinning one’s wheels” and getting nowhere. She will demonstrate how one’s organized information can be used to identify the records and information that it still missing and keep track of the sources one has already searched.
Marguerite Scully serves as president of the St. Tammany Genealogical Society in Louisiana and was the former vice president of the Board of the Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society. For the past 20 years, she has been conducting genealogical research and preparing genealogical lineage and pedigree reports for her own family and her clients. She has visited numerous historic record repositories throughout the United States and Ireland to conduct research and retrieve documents and records.
